JAMES & PAUL - Tabula Rasa
They are a father and son song writing team so Paul (father) has known James all his life. They have spent most of their lives writing music but only written songs together for about 3 years when they realised they worked well together with their different influences. Previously James had been interested mainly in dance music.
Paul and James are influenced by Death Cab for Cutie Mumford & Sons Simon & Garfunkel Foo Fighters Radiohead Comsat Angels.
The up and coming musicians, Paul and James released a new Album, “TABULA RASA” on March 27, 2022. Which originally has fifteen tracks making the cut.
The leading track, “ Modern Romance,” is written about the idea that in modern times, people are obsessed with their strong political views, to the point where they're more committed to their scripted side of the argument than their own relationships with people (hence the name 'modern romance').
“Blinded” this song follows on from the written theme of 'modern romance' and is written about people being blinded by their own biases, to the point where reasoning and negotiation is off the table. This is also why these songs are placed consecutively.
“Solitude” this song was written in lockdown and is essentially about finding yourself when you're trapped in your own solitude. It's about going insane and wanting human contact.
“Found You” is about a strangely small blonde girl. The song is about her being so small, that she's quite hard to find sometimes - hence the name 'Found You'. As in, I found you!
“Freeze” is about being trapped in a toxic relationship to the point where you'd rather live in the discomfort, than tolerate the conflict of attempting to end it.
“Feels Like” this song is about a time in my life where I was suffering from panic attacks and seizures and the song is essentially about what it 'feels like' to experience it.
“WAYCA,” ‘When Are You Coming Around' is about the Bonnie & Clyde story and what would have happened if Clyde had not been sent to prison early in his life. It's also about Bonnie's infatuation with Clyde.
“Sky Scraper Highs” this is written about being completely obsessed with someone, who is incredibly toxic and hurtful. It's about being infatuated by the 'bad' & mistaking it for an all time high.
“Ten Thousand Miles” this song is written about wanting to leave the UK, leave everything behind and go and live in Cyprus - but the idea of it seeming 'ten thousand miles' away...
“Stay Awake” was written about the idea of a couple being trapped in their home during lockdown, resulting in their love fading and they end up irritating each other with their boredom... The term 'stay awake' in the song refers to slapping out of the slug of the relationship and 'waking up' to the positives.
“Tabula Rasa” was written as an instrumental intro to the next song Please Just.
”Please Just” this song is about having a one night stand with someone, but you realise you can't stand them and want rid of them before they get to know you.
“The End” this is part one of an armageddon/reborn theme. This part is based on the end of the world as we know it with a series of nuclear strikes having wiped out most of humanity. It starts off slowly and builds up to a fast section which is meant to represent the bit where people start panicking when they realise what's coming. It includes various sound effects like thunder & rain, crowds of people chatting & the death knoll bell sound (this idea comes from the song 'Black Sabbath'.
“New Dawn” this is the second part which starts off with the sound of birds and is meant to represent the rebirth of the planet. It ends with a long solo from Paul which 'celebrates' the New Dawn.
Enjoy!
