“Pressure Cooker” Dazy/Militarie Gun
Although Militarie Gun vocalist Ian Shelton is usually found barking over his band’s sardonic post-hardcore in an oversized hoodie, he has an innately melodic voice that sounds just as good singing as yelling. Credit’s due to Richmond, Virginia fuzz-pop band Dazy for acting on this untapped potential: On their new single “Pressure Cooker,” the two bands collaborate for a feel-good blast of 1990s-style alt-rock. Recorded on opposite coasts and mixed by longtime Dinosaur Jr. engineer Justin Pizzoferrato, the song’s fuzzed-out guitar solos and hardcore-style grunts represent a parade of middle fingers to the inevitable stressors and nuisances of life. The hook is undeniable, but arguably the best part is Shelton’s intermittent, profanity-laced background rants. Each new outburst tempts you to sing along, à la another iconic ’90s alt-rock quip: “Work sucks/I know.”
